Described as a great connoisseur of Rwanda’s music traditions, Professor Gamaliel Mbonimana will share his knowledge with the public on the country’s ancient musical traditions at Goethe Institute on Thursday December 5th 2013.

His forthcoming publication “PATRIMOINE MUSICAL DU RWANDA- Musique traditionnelle (c.1690-1952)” will become a fundamental reference for the history of music in the country. From the wealth of his knowledge both as a musicologist and historian, he will talk about musical systems and genres as well as the impact zones between classical Rwandan and occidental music.

Accompanied by acoustic guitarist Jacques Buhigiro, he will present a selection of traditional songs including cradlesongs while Louis Basengo Munyaburanga will elucidate links between music and literature, especially dynastic and herdsmen’s poetry.

As Mbonimana puts it, “It will be an evening which will make us discover unknown treasures of Rwanda’s musical heritage.”
