Rwanda | LUCY: THERE IS A LOT FOREIGN DESIGNERS CAN LEARN FROM AFRICA
Kenyan designer Lucy Rao believes that there is a lot that European and American fashion designers can learn a lot from African designers, even though there is a widely held belief that African designers lag behind in style. The veteran designer however pointed out that no matter how good you a designer is, there is always something new to learn, provided they are willing to.
She said, “I don’t think there is anyone who can say that they have satisfactorily exhausted their ideas in fashion. There’s always something new to learn in fashion and provided you want to learn something new every day then you will definitely.” Rao who owns a fashion label known as RIALTO fashions also expressed her concern for the lack of commercialization of fashion and design in Rwanda, saying it’s an area that needs improvement.
“Commercialization and selling of our fashions make us who we are. If we want to sell our products then we have to market them and fully commercialize this industry,” she added.
